5 Tips for coping with negative emotions at work

As working professionals, we all know the feeling of butting heads with a coworker or feeling frustrated with our workloads. These negative emotions can affect both our productivity at work, as well as our happiness when we leave work. In order to combat these emotions, follow these tips:

Have a good relationship with your boss

By being close to a decision maker in your office, it will make it easier to approach them at a time of confrontation. This will allow you to feel comfortable to ask for what you want. You can reduce negativity in the workplace by being sure to treat your coworkers with respect. Constructive criticism, as opposed to complete rejection, will sit a lot better with your coworkers and will reduce negativity between you.Follow the Golden Rule
Not only should you not rudely reject your coworkers ideas and contributions, but you should also make sure to treat them with respect in all situations. The Golden Rule tells us to “do unto others as we would have the do unto us.” The workplace is the perfect place to put this rule into action. Give reasoning for your decisions

A lot of negativity in the workplace can be caused by feeling that your contributions are not welcome and being rejected. In order to reduce the amount of rejection you feel, always be sure to explain what you are doing and why you are doing it. This will help your coworkers to stay on the same page as you. It will also give the impression that you truly care about your work and that you are good at what you do.

 

Try to look at things from the perspective of others
In the same way that you want to be listened to and understood, your coworkers want the same thing. Always try to give them the benefit of the doubt and try to listen to what they have to say. It can be easier to do this if you look at things from their perspective and try to think about why they would’ve made the decisions that they made.
